Cytotec (Misoprostol) prevents stomach ulcerations when you are taking NSAIDs (e.g., aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen).

This drug prevents stomach ulcerations while you take NSAIDs, especially when you have a risk of developing ulcerations or have a history of ulcerations. This drug can also be used together with another drug (mifepristone) to end a pregnancy (abortion).

How Taken

Cytotec has an information leaflet which should be read carefully. If you want this drug to prevent stomach ulcers, take it orally four times a day, after meals and at bedtime, to minimize diarrhea, or act as recommended by your physician. If you use this drug for abortion, take it orally as instructed by your doctor. If you need to start labor, your healthcare professional will insert this medication into your vagina. Avoid antacids with magnesium while taking cytotec as they can make the diarrhea worse. Remember to use this medicine at the same time each day.

Drug Class and Mechanism

Cytotec is a synthetic prostaglandin. It is believed today that aspirin and NSAIDs produce stomach ulcers mostly by inhibiting the production of prostaglandins in the stomach (these are natural substances existing in the stomach and in other organs of the human body). Cytotec, taken by mouth, protects the stomach lining from these ulcerating effects of NSAIDs.
